I watch movies and shows - my wife watches sports, and that's about it. Occasionally, I convince her to sit down and watch a movie with me. I try to choose something I think she'll really like or I let her pick, which is what we did the other night. She picked "Inside Out 2." She wanted to see it in the theater but I didn't remind her when it was out, so we missed it... and it was my fault. (Maybe she'll let me live that down now...?)
So, we watched the movie together while sipping gin and tonic... and we both really enjoyed it! People who got all hung up on it not delving into the true complexities of teen emotions and whatnot? C'mon, man. It's a Pixar movie. Go watch an Indie film or something. (I almost completely judge a movie by how entertained I feel while watching it.)
(SPOILER ALERT)
Anyway, during the climactic scene, when Sadness says, "Joy... Riley wants you," I lost it. All of the stress I've been under just came gushing out. After all the horrible things my coworkers and I are being put through, it felt like MY sadness was recognizing that I desperately need more joy in my life. Not more sadness or anxiety or anger. I need more joy.
Eric - thanks for all your work on All the Fanfare. I look forward to seeing your emails in my inbox. They bring me just a little bit of joy - and that's what many of us need right now.
As for what provided "good vibes" this week in cinema, I thoroughly enjoyed Bridget Jones: Mad About a Boy (infuriatingly straight to streaming for you lot in the US despite being a Marvel-beating box office smash here - thoughts and prayers) and also romantic comedy slasher Heart Eyes.
Firstly, I've already highlighted this in a "note" (I think - still not fully got to grips with Substack), but I must again praise the poetic eloquence of this paragraph:
"If magic exists, it does not live on well-trod paths; the bustle and roar of industry leave no place for it. Magic needs silence to flourish. It favors crooked alleys and ill-lit apothecaries and the dark nook of libraries where the perfume of aged paper is the strongest. There’s a reason most fairy tales take place in the woods, where the shadows are deepest."
Secondly, I've not watched any of what you've written about in the latter section, so cannot comment, except to say I'll probably watch Cobra Kai at some point. :)
I relate so much to the randomness of life events. I have no idea where I'd be now if I hadn't randomly decided to join Tumblr one day because someone I watched on YouTube was also on Tumblr. I ended up meeting my girlfriend of 10+ years there, moved to Poland to be with her, found out there was a Google office in her city, ended up getting hired in one of their ad teams in a role that had nothing to do with my studies. Now I'm still with her, still working in ad tech and living in Amsterdam. Life can be pretty random.
Introspection FIVE!! I dig it! Also: now I want to watch Scrubs a little bit (IYKYK). Same on slurping up every precious White Lotus minute! I wish they had given us two episodes to snack on, but yeah-already VERY intriguing. Boyd Goes to Thailand. I’m all in! 🍿
It’s actually a different type of Boyd. It’s only been 2 episodes of this season, but his character is pensive, irritated, and carrying the weight of some dark, dark secret. It’s an understated, deeply compelling character…stressful in a MUCH different way. Nothing can come CLOSE to Boyd Crowder. I wish he had been cast in Deadwood, too 😉
Ha! Little German town, that can only mean one place in Michigan. I’ve never been inside Bronners despite visiting at least a dozen times.
Life is funny and totally random. Glad you’re content with how yours is turning out so far. I never would have guessed I’d be a chicken farmer in Oregon yet here I am. No regrets either!
Regarding Amy Schumer. I haven’t enjoyed her movies but I did enjoy Life & Beth. I’ll give Kinda Pregnant a try. I could use a good laugh.
I’m going to get to your next Deadwood article this weekend. I am looking forward to it.
The White Lotus-- Love Thailand. Like Walton Goggins in anything and miss Jennifer Coolidge in anything. Hate all the ugly Americans.
I love Goggins. White Lotus is on my list of shows to check out.
I have so many questions about the Ratliff kids!
Yes. That too.

I still haven't seen this! Keep meaning to get to it but you know how it goes.
Thanks for the kind words, greatly appreciated. Hope you are doing ok!
Welcome to the Cult of Aldi. If you do not own a set of going-to-Aldis pajama bottoms and flip flips, they will be issued to you shortly.
😆

Definitely recommend Cobra Kai but it gets rather silly at points.
Perhaps I wasn’t clear… I’ve seen some of it, though I’ve not watched the final episodes yet. :)

Wow! That is such a crazy story, almost entirely formed by randomness. Are you originally from the States?
No, I'm from France :). It definitely made it slightly easier to move around in Europe but still so random!

I still haven't seen any of White Lotus! 🙈
Oh. My friend….you must remedy this. Immediately. Can you call out for the next three weeks or so? I’m a “doctor;” I can write you a note…😉
I love when Boyd is in his preacher phase and I think White Lotus is a lot of that?

Omg Walton in Deadwood!? 🤯🤯🤯
Right?!?? I think he would have given Al a run for his money…..🤠
TFW someone else knows the magic of Aldi sourdough.

It actually wasn't Frankenmuth (that's mid-Michigan technically). The city in question is Gaylord.
Happy to have found a safe space to discuss the joy and idiocy of “Cobra Kai”
