God yes, this is the ultimate Football video game, I don't care what anyone else says. I don't follow football. I'm not a football fan. I'm not a football video game fan. I was ADDICTED to this game for years. It's so intuitive to learn, just the right amount of options (as you said) to make the game challenging and strategy-based but always fun and easy for anyone to grasp. I imagine I would still get addicted to this game today, too. It's the perfect football game. Unfortunate that it landed so early in console history, as future games could only muddy the concept by adding to it.

In terms of it standing the test of time - the graphics and minimal options/controls will always be a massive adjustment for modern gamers. But I would argue that any gamer that spends a decent amount of time with it (more than one play, for sure) would begin to understand its charms, and can unlock that part of their mind that's been programmed to equate graphic resolution and infinite options as quality.
