Unfortunately, although Avatar is going to make a shitload of money, I'm greatly concerned about how Cameron's bloated billion-dollar beached whale of a movie is going to impact the industry overall. In Hollywood, the eternal debate is always between Art vs Commerce and, most of the time, Commerce always gets the last word. Their money doesn't juggle jiggle, it folds. I'm afraid Avatar's success will spur movie producers into abandoning modestly-budgeted films in favor of expensive, fx-heavy cinematic eye candy. Yes, Everything Everywhere All At Once is an incredible success, both artistically and commercially, but it will never make a zillion dollars, so I think it's less likely that movies like that will be greenlighted in the future.

I think your fears are absolutely valid, especially since by and large, people aren't going to the theaters as often, and when they do, it's usually to see the big tentpole picture. I'm as guilty as the next guy. Frankly, these days I am more interested in long-form serialized storytelling in prestige TV than in most films.
