There’s this anime called Frieren you should really check it out. It’s free on Netflix as of today and one of your dorky friends has them on blu-ray.

I guess since you've mentioned this in a public forum... 😆

Everything you said about parenting grown/growing kids is true. My oldest graduates college this year and I am worried he’ll get a job out of state (obvi I just want him to find a job he’s happy at). I also support your bday idea— I’ve been contemplating hosting a roller skating party but I’m worried about the liability for a bunch of middle aged people on skates!!

A roller skating party would be so fun! I'd be terrified of breaking something but otherwise! 😆

I usually love sports docuseries (loves drive to survive, quarterback, even the rugby one) but I could not get through the first episode of Full Swing. I can't say why but I can't relate to any of the golfers featured I guess. Did it take you a few episodes to get into it?

Nah I was in from go. There's definitely a strong "bro" element that I can see being off-putting.

Yep this one is just not for me. But I can see how it works for others. It definitely has all the elements of a great show

I haven't watched it, but any honest documentary about the Fab 5 would start with the rollover accident involving (along others) Tractor Trailer and Mateen Cleeves and end with a UM booster being indicted for running an illegal numbers ring at the River Rogue plant and for money laundering and eventually pleading guilty so he could turn states witness.

Andor is on the "rewatch soon list" but first I need to finish my rewatch of Righteous Gemstones before the new season comes out.

Tractor Trailer was a few years after the Fab Five. The documentary goes into the booster paying Webber so it seemed pretty balanced.

Good point. I believe it was the accident that kicked off the investigation.

I love the poignant parenting preambles, please keep them up! They always make me think of similar things in my life ☺️

P.S. The Junger book sounds right up my alley, just saved the audiobook to my Spotify. Thanks for the great recco as always!

Let me know what you think of it. He meanders at points but it's a pretty profound book.

Have only 3 more tracks to go in the audiobook but I love it! It's so profound. His life and near-death are so interesting, I'm really learning a lot. The Schrodinger stuff is wild! Thx again for putting this on our radars!

Glad you are enjoying it! 🤓

Andor was so good. Aside from first season of the Mandolorian I would say that show is the best of the Disney Star Wars output thus far. Season 2 let;s go!

I've been saying goodbye, to my sons who live far away, every time they visit me and I miss the hell out of them. It doesn't get easier, but seeing them is worth the pain of saying goodbye.

It's my birthday (Feb 28).

You and I don't have a lot in common; your idea of a birthday party isn't mine for sure. But I enjoy the trip into your head, your reviews and this column about saying goodbyes, especially. Thank you.

Great! I felt just like that as a father. Three phase of life: youre- togetherness- youre

But not one goodbye. Just say goodbye three times🤣

Well I've been sick all week (blah), but I am enjoying The Pitt on Max. I haven't watched a hospital drama since House, but this one is shot 24 style, which is compelling.

Expand full comment

I don't watch hospital dramas as a general rule (I'm out on anything that smells like a procedural) but the comparison to 24 got my attention. Also HBO. Hope you feel better!

+1000 to everything Clay said about the Pitt. I do like medical dramas but this is just a great show that transcends it's genre. The acting is amazing, the characters are all really well written and the 24 hour format is super well executed.

Thanks for jumping in to share your experience. I've added it to mh watchlist. 🤓

Exactly the same. I don't do any of those things either. A friend said I had to check it out, largely because it's all Pittsburgh where I'm from. But I was immediately hooked by 3 things in the first few minutes:

1. The 24 style. It makes a lot of sense in a trauma unit.

2. HBO is not restricted by lame network rules. You get full reality.

3. The main character (Noah Wylie is amazing) is dealing with PTSD from Covid, and seeing the pandemic through that lens is powerful.

It's on the watchlist! I'll let you know when I dip into it. Thanks for the rec!

I enjoyed The Fab Five documentary as well. Watching those guys when they came on the scene was pure awe. Everything about them, how they played, how they complimented each other, the shorts ofc. Don’t think we’ll ever see a collection of 5 freshman like that again. Irony is, it should be easier today, with NIL money.

Question for you, as a fan… do you think they “villains” at the time? I’m working on a sports villains post and I always saw the Fab Five as more Batman than a villain, the way say, the Bad Boy Pistons were. I absolutely hated Duke so I can’t tell if I was just biased in liking the Fab Five as much as I did.
