A fine podcast. Spielberg made some interesting films about the empowerment of children, as director (E.T.) and and as storyteller/executive producer (The Goonies - not comparable to a masterpiece like E.T. but still culturally significant, and Richard Donner directs very solidly).
My views on The Goonies are well documented elsewhere (I won't bother linking as I'm sure you've read the article in question). I have nostalgia attached to it, and seeing it at the cinema when I was ten, I loved it. However, objectively, I don't think it is a great film.
I agree with you that Chunk/Sloth provide the moral centre of the film, but not in a preachy way. Chunk has all the funniest lines too ("I want to play the violin!"). :)
And one of my favorite fun facts about this movie is who played Sloth. It was John Matuszcak (probably spelled that wrong). At the time he was an all-pro for the Raiders.
What? That is crazy and awesome! Did not know that. And yes, pop the corn and let yourself get carried away by Goonie goodness. It really will heal you :)

Agreed on Chunk. As you know, we thought he not only had some of the best lines, but was an under appreciated comic in the film. Thanks Dillon!
Loved this! Now I have to go and watch it again.
