Okay, I just borrowed Misbelief from the library because I am wildly interested in that kind of thing. So thank you for the recommendation. Dinner and the library LOLOL Dude, you are not that old.

I think you DO have acumen for writing about the heavy stuff! Good for you to take this week off from the regular scheduled programming.

For our part, last weekend my husband wanted to watch the SW sequel trilogy which we hadn't done since it first came out. The last one had cringey dialogue but I had forgotten how the first two were quite good! Sure SW and other pop culture things seem inconsequential these days but I say bring on the frivolity and mundane joys of life 😊 P.S. I think a dinner and library date night sounds absolutely perfect!

Thanks Marmi! I'm planning on revisiting the sequels soon. I'm not looking forward to The Rise of Skywalker. 🫠

Very much relating to allll of this. We always need art in every form and permutation. So even though everything has changed, that has not. See you back at base soon enough 💗

I know how you feel I think. I am tired of thinking or writing about politics, it accomplishes nothing. But feel superficial writing about fun stuff right now too. Also unmotivated. We have to find joy in the little things I guess, not let Trump Vadar et al. sap the "force" out of us.

That last line gave me chills. I am there with what you say. Thanks.

It hasn't been a great week. My biggest takeaway is everyone needs to do what works for them to protect their mental health. There's no wrong answer. Well, there is. But if you say I want to focus on the serious stuff or I want to lose myself in whatever makes me happy, do what works for you.

At least we've got the Lions...

💯. I'll be back to my usual nonsense soon. I can't help it. It's what I love. And I think I may just need to live my life this time around, and pay less attention to whatever is happening in DC. Not so much stick my head in the sand but setup a chair and have a cold one.

Speaking of the Lions:I saw a comment on Reddit that hit me where I live. It said ofc the Lions would have a legitimate chance at being the best team in the NFL the year there may be an apocalypse. 🫠

Just as the Lions are about to start their game winning drive in the super bowl…the nukes get launched. That would be around right.

I get it. I so get it and glad I’m not the only one who feels this way. I love my country and I want to rise above the fact that more than half the country voted for a man who is literally orange, ( I won’t go into the rest of his imperfections) but its really hard to understand. I feel that I am in the Twilight zone.

The Twilight Zone analogy is perfect. It's so baffling!

It really helps knowing so many of us feel the same.

I can understand your reasoning, Eric, and think a library date night to read up on conspiracy theories is a legitimately cool way to be an adult in this world. I'll have to check out some of those books myself, although I am also trying to reclaim a habit of reading fiction and biographies...

But I would be remiss not to pass along a bit from C.S. Lewis' well-known essay/talk from 1939, "Learning in Wartime," wherein he makes a rock solid case that times of trouble are exactly when we should dig in and insist on cherishing the good stuff in this life -- art, literature, history, etc.

Going for longest comment today, I've got one of many money quotes here:

"Plausible reasons have never been lacking for putting off all merely cultural activities until some imminent danger has been averted or some crying injustice put right. But humanity long ago chose to neglect those plausible reasons. They wanted knowledge and beauty now, and would not wait for the suitable moment that never come. Periclean Athens leaves us not only the Parthenon but, significantly, the Funeral Oration. The insects have chosen a different line: they have sought first the material welfare and security of the hive, and presumable they have their reward. Men are different. They propound mathematical theorems in beleaguered cities, conduct metaphysical arguments in condemned cells, make jokes on scaffolds, discuss the last new poem while advancing to the walls of Quebec, and comb their hair at Thermopylae. This is not panache; it is our nature."

Anyway, I look forward to next week's High Five. :-)

That's a stellar quote! So encouraging and affirming. Thanks for sharing it, and for the kind comment. 🤓

Btw library date nights are the new drive-in theaters, according to me.

Eric, your writing on movies is good. I totally appreciate you not wanting to dip into the (insert something worse than meconium tar pit) of online political discussions. And your acknowledgment of a desire to write about more is genuinely inspiring.

That said, there might be an opp to write about films that are relevant (All The President’s Men, The Contender) or even funny (Election, Idiocracy). Even something like Veep, which basically ended because they couldn’t out-wow DT irl. I’ll continue to read & support your writing regardless, just throwing it out there as ideas.

Appreciate the support, and the acknowledgement that this is actually worthwhile, and not a complete waste of time! 😅

I don't think I've seen any any of those movies! I guess my tastes skew nerdy. 🤓

Idiocracy is a Mike Judge classic. Hit that first. It’s bang on for the times we are in.

Stressful times indeed. It's been almost 10 years of this, It's hard to believe. I feel old now. But I ain't gloomy. It's theater. It always has been. Maybe you're not watching the show you want, but it's a show. What gets me down is good people in bad places. Change the channel. It'll be good, believe me
