I'm super excited for the D&D movie dropping in a couple of weeks. I think it's going to be one of those flicks well done on the nostalgia front, doesn't take itself too seriously, but also honors the medium. I'm also listening down U2's Songs of Surrender they just released. REALLY love it. It's like a cooler version of MTV Unplugged (pour one out for that series..quite possibly the only quality thing to come out of their studios, save for Remote Control...of course) :)
That is awesome on the D&D field trip..YES! I think it's going to be amazing and so, so fun. The cast looks fantastic. Right! How could I forget how MTV sparked the "reality TV" revolution! You're right..I gobbled up those first handful of seasons like Augustus Gloop on the shores of the chocolate river :) A friend of mine and I would watch together and ruthlessly debrief in real time. Puck--the OG reality TV villain :)
Puck! I hated him so much but I couldn't take my eyes off of him.
For me, the second season (California) remains the high water mark. I sometimes wonder what happened to Dom. And I can still hear Jon yelling at Beth to get off the phone. Crazy the things we remember.
HAAAAAA!!!! Yeah..Puck was beyond the worst. I remember that as well with Jon and Beth...wow. Do you remember how shocked and weird it felt to watch people arguing and fighting like that? Seems like it happened in another timeline entirely!
Medium will have to convince me they actually care about letting us build without tearing it down for no good reason, before I spend much time on it again
Listening: The dB’s “Like This,” and Hazel English’s “Summer Nights” EP.
Reading: Mind numbing annual recurrent training stuff for work. Every year, I think “this is the year they mix things up!” And every year, they find a new cure for insomnia.
Watching: The Wire (just finished Season 3), and a bit of March Madness.
That Point Break piece will become a freakin' novel soon, haha.
As for Youtube (if you didn't know this already): If you're using the platform on a computer or laptop, you don't need to pay for premium for the ads to go away just use an adblocker (it's free) and that gets rid of them.
Congrats on the boost! It didn't last long for me (5-6 days) but I was pleasantly surprised that the piece reached more readers than I expected.
I echo your sentiment about breaking up longer articles. Slate published its “New Black Film Cannon” list, which provides an interesting aesthetic for lengthy posts.
This all sounds totally normal to me. You're not dorky...I'm dorky. LoL We just started trying out Pathfinder 2. In all the ogl hubbub we've been trying figure out what we'll end up doing if we want to skip out on on 5e. It's kinda up in the air. Also, we just started my husband's low magic homebrew he's been putting together over 14ish years. It's cool to have a go to for special occasions too.
So this is going to be super dorky, but YOU ASKED... so it's your fault. :)
We're playing Dungeon Crawl Classics, which is basically a gnarly, modern take on Basic D&D. It's my favorite system, and my son's too. Currently we're adventuring through the Purple Planet, which is sort of like The Hills Have Eyes meets Dune, with the gonzo sensibilities of Mad Max: Fury Road. DCC is pretty deadly, and wild. Magic is unpredictable. It checks all my boxes. :)
I'm in a couple of 5E games too, but DCC is the game we play on special occasions.

I miss MTV Unplugged so much. Remote Control was great too! But how dare you throw shade on the Real World? Those first 4-5 seasons were great! :D
The D&D movie looks bonkers in the best possible way and I can't way. My D&D crew is planning on seeing it together.

Turns out the Real World was the harbinger of our present hellscape. Who knew?
Can we sue for damages? :)

How was the transition to the domain on Substack? I’m nervous to set it up, for some reason.
Was about the same as switching the Medium URL. A little smoother but similar. I'd recommend it!
One thing is you either have to set it up as www.website.com or a subdomain, which is what I did.
I’d set it up as a full domain. I just worry about email deliverability. Does Substack provide all the DKIM and SPF records?
I don't know how they're managing the email aspect. It's pretty important obviously! But I just needed to setup a CNAME record.

I mostly listen to YouTube on my phone, hence Premium. 🤓
And yes, this article is getting ridiculous. 🙈

Lmk what you think of PF2! We're considering trying it out too.
Yay D&D! Sounds like a blast. What Edition are you all planning on playing?
