I am in Camp FYVE 4LYFE! But also in Camp Writing is Hard Enough Don’t Add Another 20lbs to the Press. Respect! I’ve had Queen Charlotte on the list, but haven’t made the leap. Might fire that up. I recently blew through the last season of Never Have I Ever. Enjoyable, but not as strong as the prior seasons. John McEnroe as narrator just might be the sneaky genius comedy gift we never knew we needed. Enjoy vacation-Sunny D RULEZ!! As does a proper lunch of Flavor Ice and Cool Ranch Doritos 💥🤘🏼
Oh please do, Marmi! I'll be interested to see what you think. I found it funny and smart and really emotional in spots. It's a fast gulp of episodes once you're on a roll :) Enjoy!!!
I really admire Mindy but have to confess I've never watched any TV shows or movies of hers! I'm a huge fan though of her first book, I identified with it a lot and it was very very funny. Up there with Tina Fey's Bossypants and Sarah Silverman's The Bedwetter. Mindy's second book I'm afraid was not very good, it really kills me to say that!
Speaking of books and funny ladies - read some more of yours and I'm on Whoopi now 😃 I love love getting educated on powerhouses like Robin Thede and Mabel Normand!!
Hey Marmi! I also developed a deep appreciation for what Mindy has done in terms of becoming a gate keeper in order to help more women advance across the industry. I also thought her first book was the strongest and, same, didn't connect as much with the second one. I have read some criticism of her work that she's not doing any favors for South Asian representation, which I can't speak to as I really can't say what of her portrayals are owning Indian culture in honest ways and what traffics in stereotypes. She's become a pretty fascinating creative in the humor space..for sure! So glad you're digging into some new funny ladies. I also had such a blast learning about these women who like Robin Thede and Issa Rae and Lena Waithe are gaining incredible momentum! YAY FUNNY PEOPLE!!! :)
Earlier this year I watched a webinar where Mindy was the guest speaker; it's funny cuz it was put on by my business credit card company so ostensibly it was supposed to be about teaching about financial literacy. But I was tuning in for this exclusive celebrity content hee hee 😉
And in it she was very poignant about how she had to do major delayed gratification in terms of what she was seeing all her friends get to experience in life. So it's only now that she is finally getting to be in the financial situation to work from home being the boss of her own shows, while being a mom.
Not once did she bring up being a South Asian female explicitly, but me always reading between the lines, the subtext was loud and clear. We constantly have to sublimate ourselves and experience all kinds of microaggressions on the very long path to achieving what we want in life. So my heart was breaking for her during this financial literacy webinar sponsored by Capital One 😆
So I think she was insinuating, "my classmates at Dartmouth didn't have to go through any of this, they could get these Andy Sachs type of internships and jobs seemingly very easily."
But still, I think Mindy's second book was not as bad as Yes Please by Amy Poehler. She's a genius character actor and host, but I could barely make it through it was so boring!! Wish someone would've told me to just get your book and read the section on Amy in there instead! 😉
That’s fascinating about that webinar and makes a lot of sense with other things I’ve read about her. I know she’s talked about feeling very isolated at Dartmouth. I know that campus a little bit-more diversity in the sciences than the humanities and in a rural setting. I think Kaling has had to fight pretty hard for her opportunities and we never know what that looks like from the inside. Not easy and, as you said, microagressions and subtle bias galore. Very complicated.
Huge +1 for vacations that aren't just box checking marathons. I love Disney, but there's something to be said about just sitting in the sun doing a whole lotta nothin'.
Listening: The Police's Synchronicity. Turns 40 tomorrow, and that makes me feel really old. Killer record, though.
Watching: F1. My younger coworkers have figured out how to take the gate monitors in our breakroom and use them for streaming (ALLEGEDLY, of course). I'm hooked.
Reading: Still working through "Make it Stop." Also picked up a copy of The Big Takeover magazine. wanted to make sure print media wasn't entirely dead.
I feel similarly about Charlotte vs. The Queen. In fact, I can't get through the series because I just feel so sad that the character I like turns into one I don't. I'm nearly through the last episode but I find it so boring I can't quite get through.
Recently watched the remake of White Men Can't Jump and thoroughly enjoyed it. People who have no boundaries in the restroom scare me. I try to avoid all potential awkward encounters as well as public toilets...i blame trauma from having a festival poo.
Made the same mistake many times myself. Mom and Pop Bateman did indeed produce successful siblings, but coulda done a little better giving them more differentiated names 😊
Aw I miss the high five cover photos, but totes agree that your mental health is waaaay more important 😃 I can really relate (to the electric toothbrush part, not so much the videogame controllers since I'm the girl who didn't even know The Last of Us started out as a game).
I always wanted to watch Air, ok now I will definitely watch this soon. I already get a bunch of articles about shoes in my news feed, so why not feed the algo some more by watching this!
This week - finished reading Smart Until It's Dumb by Emmanuel Maggiori and The Making of a Manager by Julie Zhou. 5 stars for Emmanuel, 3 stars for Julie

Cool Ranch Doritos forever! 😀
I'll have to check out Never Have I Ever--thanks for the rec!
That Dorito dust has the cure for COVID in it! 100%! NHIEver is pretty solid and has a lot of heart built into it...definitely one for the list!
Johnny Mac + Mindy Kaling?! Great doubles team 🎾 Will have to check out NHIE then!

It's definitely worth sticking till the end. Made me think about the queen a bit differently.

I'm going to be tackling White Men in an upcoming article, great movie.
And Air I thought was over rated. It was more meh than OMG I NEED TO WATCH THIS AGAIN!
I agree with your assessment of “Air” except that Jason Bateman’s name is Jason.
And if you want to see one of the great “work bathroom” scenes ever, watch Robert Downey Sr.‘a 60s classic, “Putney Swope.”
😂 I totally mixed up his name with his sister's 😆
Made the same mistake many times myself. Mom and Pop Bateman did indeed produce successful siblings, but coulda done a little better giving them more differentiated names 😊
