I HAVE SO MANY THOUGHTS!!! First--Get. Caught. Up! Right now. These last two episodes just deliver in troves. Ep. 4 is Vic-centric...so good. 1. I laughed so hard when you were like "Os is just a blue collar guy!" WHO IS ALSO UNHINGED AND MURDERY. But mostly the blue collar thing. I think there is a very strong pull of the "rags to riches/self made man" myth working here that is part of the reason why we're (I'm, you) rooting for him. He stands in contrast with the Falcones who seem like a crime family dynasty--rich, privileged--even Alberto seems like he never had to work too hard to rise-ish in the family. There is a sense from the way Oswald has that monologue about the old time Boss that he wants to use his criminality for some good-ish; that he wants to stick it to those who have everything, take it all for granted, and then roll over everyone beneath them, which is everyone. That's just a super powerful cultural narrative and it really works in this series. So that's why you're like "He gutted that guy...but he kind of deserved it and Os will take care of the little guy.." It's also an incredibly dangerous myth because the other myth bound to come into the picture is "power corrupts." 2. Sophia: Dude. We don't know what we don't know about her. When you see the other episodes you'll know what I mean. I'm not convinced she's the mass murderer the public thinks she is. Everyone underestimates her at their own peril (and yes to more discussion about women in this show). 3. I hope you do a revisit/round table at the end of the series because THERE IS SO MUCH with this show....I, also, want to delve more into family; the influence of mothers and fathers; underestimating the underdog; the hints of Tony Soprano in Farrell's character, and even the concept of madness/insanity. SO MUCH! It's all so good! Thanks for this my friend...totally over the fence! X!
So many great points here! I get a little happy whenever Oswald talks about "guys like us," because it is leaning all the way into that class divide. The ways they get us to love Oswald are many and they're all effective, but the whole time you know you shouldn't be enjoying this guy as much as you do. It's an amazing trick.
I'd be thrilled to discover there's more to Sofia's story, even if it's just reasons for her whole deal. I'm so tantalized by the little breadcrumbs you just left! I need to catch up, posthaste.
I really didn't mean to fall behind on episodes! Though I've now seen the first episode 3 times so that's gotta count for some lol.
I need quality time to watch this, which I don’t seem to have. I did watch a video of CFs transformation, which my brain still refuses to believe.
Farrell is unrecognizable, in every way. It's quite a performance. I can't recommend this show highly enough!
