Do you think Joe Abercrombie’s books are appropriate for a 14 year old? (My son loves Sanderson, Andy Weir etc.) Violence is ok but sexy times is not. :)
They're pretty mature books. Only one sex scene I can think of in the first trilogy and it's mostly played as a joke. I have the same worldview as you when it comes to this stuff and I don't think I'd let my son read them until he was at least 16.
I assume he's already read Project Hail Mary? Otherwise that, immediately. Other options: Fairy Tale (atypical Stephen King as it's a PG-13 adventure) or The Runelords series. I'd take a serious look at Runelords as it involves a magic system where people can level up their powers, which is a very teenage boy concept. It was written by Sanderson's college professor. 🤓
I'm glad I asked! Thank you for that info. I'll hold off on getting these for him until he's older for sure, given that info. Yes he's read Project Hail Mary but not Runelords! Going to go check out that series now, thank you for the tip. It sounds a bit like an early version of LitRPG with the leveling up? And speaking of LitRPG have you read The Land series by Aleron Kong? Super fun.
I haven't gotten into LitRPG yet tho I picked up the first Dungeon Crawler Carl and He Who Fights With Monsters. Mostly because I wonder if I should try writing one 😂
I loved Runelords, it's a killer concept. Good luck, lmk if you have other qs.
He Who Fights with Monsters is good, but not as good as The Land IMHO. The world building was more fast paced in The Land and the humor was on point. I enjoyed HWFWM though.
And yes you should write one! I recently watched a video via another Substack that interviews authors. (I’ll look for the link after I post this comment.) LitRpg is an emerging market that needs more great authors.

🤣🤣🤣
I really need to pick up the Star Wars shows on blu ray.
I have the first 2 seasons of Mandalorian. There's really nice.
In theory I should get a blue ray player before buying said blue rays. That may or may not happen.
So - no Christmas list this year 😂
🤣 some of this might be on my list
